The above is an extract of email received from Cynthia Osborne in 2002 in response to the following comments and requests for information about the photograph:-

«i»Edgar Roebuck, second from left, back row with a group of workmates. Brian and Malcolm Roebuck think man top left is Tom Hargreaves.

But what was the occasion?

And what were those funny sticks they were all holding....were these the Chorley Morris Dancers?

Well, I was both pleased and pleasantly surprised when the following extract arrived in an email from my Cousin Cynthia:«/i»

17 "I do remember the week we had a visit from Aunt Lily being all taken up by decorating, which I thought at the time to be a bit strange for somebody to come miles, and not have a relaxing week, but get stuck in to hard work. I remember us all being ordered about by this very strict (I thought) lady - but the job certainly got done, and it served as a threat that decorating got kept up "or should we send for Aunt Lily again?" "No, No - I'll do it straight away!"

Dad never forgot being sent scurrying out for more stuff as ordered, nor did I forget scraping distemper off and rubbing down with an abrasive block and bucket of cold water. The threat bit was always brought up by Mum if any slight reluctance was shown at the suggestion of decorating, although I do recollect that in later years she did take on decorating tasks herself, being used to cutting accurately material. In all the years of dressmaking she was good at getting straight edges and trimming round awkward bits."

"Going on to Uncle Edgar - of course I have many memories of him -a lot of which you must have shared, but I do remember that he gave me my first ballroom dance lesson. We were at a VE-day party in front of the shops on Grayswood Avenue. There was a band or something, and at night there was a dance at which Uncle Edgar instructed me in the arts of ballroom dancing. It was just another childhood memory that sticks out."
