The route took us through the notorious Gotthard Tunnel. It is about 14 km long, had only been built for a couple of years, and already a road accident had caused a pile-up and a serious fire, and many people had been trapped and killed in there. So now they only let a few vehicles through per minute, and you get seriously delayed instead - still, it has to be quicker than going over the mountains.
