Casa D'Argo, Herculaneum

The name of this house means, literally, "House of the Ship", so whether it was a wealthy merchant who built it, or whether it concerns the nature of the building, we are not sure.  It was built in pre-Roman times, around a large courtyard or garden, grassed over now, with an impressive surround of colonnades where the main rooms were.

The tour takes you around some of the rooms in the Casa d'Argo, which were highly decorated, encouraging the theory that a very rich family owned it.
