The Basilica was built in pre-Roman times, in about 120BC. We know this from Ossic graffiti present in the stone. In the photo below we are in the main nave, with columns either side of us dividing the building into two side naves also. We are looking at the altar area at the front. Have a look at the open doorway "upstairs" - there is the edge of one of these triangular porticoes like on many classical and neo-classical buildings of this style. Under that triangular portico was a balcony where the magistrates would stand to make their proclamations. This was all enclosed, with a roof, when first built.
