Above: This picture, taken in one of the museums (don't tell!) shows the landscape when flooded in winter.  The Bronze Age settlement was built on an island on stilts, with a walkway leading up to it, and all surrounded by water, making it easier to defend.  At this point, people were living in groups no larger than one family or clan.  These people incidentally are offering weapons to the gods.  As they did this, they rendered them unusable, then threw them in the water.

And below is a photo of the real remains of the palisade. Sorry about the photo quality, difficult subject, wet dark brown wood in confined space.  (the dummies in the static display in the top photo were in an unlit case and equally difficult).  The archaeologists have installed an irrigation system above the wood in situ, shored up the trench, then put a roof over it.
